Type Locality and Naming
Broach Gr - middle formation: Holotype section: Shinawari village in Samana Range. Hypo: Shaikh Budin Hill, Marwat Range. Author: A.N. Fatmi, 1977. Reference section: None.
Lithology and Thickness
Sandy limestone. It consists of thin to well bedded limestone with nodular marl, calcareous and non-calcareous shale and quartzose, ferruginous and calcareous sandstone. The limestone is grey, brownish grey with fine to coarse texture and includes sandy, oolitic and ferruginous beds. The shale is grey, dark grey, brownish grey, splintery and at places calcareous. Sandstone is white to light grey, brown and occurs in thin and thick beds, having cross bedding and ripple marks.
Thickness: 12 - 400 m It is over 400 m thick (base faulted) in type area, 80 m in Shaikh Budin Hill, 35 m in Bhoje Nallah and 30 m in Broach Nallah of Surghar Range, 12 m in Chak Dalla section in Kalachitta Range and 25 m in Bagnotar section of Hazara.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
Conformably underlain by Datta Fm (transitional contact).
Upper contact
Confromably overlain by Samana Suk Fm (transitional contact).
Regional extent
The formation is widely developed in Kohat-Margala Province (Ko-MP; Kohat, Kalachitta, Hazara), Trans Indus Range (TrIR) and the Salt Range. The formation thins out and disappears west of Kohat.
